2007 / 2008 Dunlop Drivers Cup
U.S. Regional Qualifier
Introducing the 2007 U.S. Regional Qualifier Competitors for the Dunlop Drivers Cup!
Troy's dream drive would be to start at the tip of South America and end all the way up in Alaska. It would be an extreme journey with gnarly unmaintained roads and other natural barriers that would test even the most mentally and physically strong individual. In the meantime, he has a definite idea of what it will take to win the Dunlop Drivers Cup. He believes it will take a driver with a never-say-die attitude and a smooth driving style. They must also have the right stuff to be able to drive many different vehicles while being efficient and fast.
Troy thinks that he is well on his way to the top with a smooth and aggressive, yet cool and calculating driving style. Plus, he's spent three days at Bondurant Racing School, so he has that valuable experience in his bag of driving tricks!
As an editor on the TV reality show “Survivor”, H.A. is accustomed to seeing people competing at the highest level. Like contestants standing on poles — in the middle of a lake — for hours just to get peanut butter or a slice of pizza. Intense stuff like that. But seriously, H.A. experiences the thrill of competition on his own by kart racing with the Tri-C Karters Karting Club near his hometown of South Pasadena, California.
Cars have been a part of H.A.'s life from an early age. According to his grandmother, he could tell what kind-of-car was going by her house by the sound alone … as a five year old! Now that's quite a talent, one worthy of a reality show!
Ryan's love for cars started with his Matchbox car collection when he was a kid. That's undoubtedly where he honed his aggressive, calculating, precise and consistent driving style … even before he was old enough to hit the streets! He has used this driving style to compete in the Baja 1000 course, and that could ultimately help him in his quest for the Dunlop Drivers Cup!
Ryan's dream car would have a V8 race engine that never needs any gas. That would be the ultimate dream of just about any muscle car owner with gas being around three bucks a gallon these days!
Garrett's love affair with cars started at the tender age of three when he helped his dad upgrade a '64 Ranchero by dropping a 289 with a four-barrel Holly and a four on-the-floor into it. But that wasn't his greatest achievement. Later in life he converted a '98 Ford F-150 into an off-road truck making it durable, fast and fun to drive!
Garrett believes that he will need to stay completely focused at all times during the Dunlop Drivers Cup competition. He's banking on a driving style that's attentive, fast and aggressive, yet controlled. That sounds like a pretty well thought-out plan!
At age 14 Jim had his first real taste of cars. His neighbor had a '67 Pontiac Tempest that had a bad starter. He told Jim that if he could get the car to start, then he could keep it! Like any 14-year-old, he dug into the starter and took it apart. But unlike most 14-year-olds, he put the starter back together and it actually worked. He was then the proud owner of his first car!
Jim's dream drive would be in a Ferrari F430 Spider. He would start in Northern Italy and travel down to the tip of the boot. A Ferrari in Italy, now that's Italian! And with the motto "drive it like you stole it," he is sure to do just fine in the competition!
Jeff has been around racing since his childhood because his father was a race car driver who raced a Porsche 550K Spyder. He would regularly take the whole family to races — Can-Am, Drag, Dirt Track, Indy 500, etc. It didn't matter what kind of racing, it was always fun for the family.
Jeff lists his most memorable driving experience (so far) as leading a group of 120 Acura NSXs on Highway 89 from Phoenix to Prescott, Arizona. He stated that the view in the rear view mirror of all those cars behind him was amazing. Jeff would like to replicate that view, no doubt, of all the other competitors in his rear view mirror during the Dunlop Drivers Cup races!
Zeke would someday love to drive in the Baja 1000 — the horsepower and dirt being the main draw. But in the meantime the Dunlop Drivers Cup is what he is concentrating on. He describes his driving style as "fast," so he knows at least part of what it takes to win the race.
Zeke has had the opportunity to go to the Proving Grounds in Uvalde, Texas and drive on their wet track. He's now seen the light and drives for Dunlop, so we won't hold that flirtation with a rival tire company against him!
Rick has been in the broadcasting business for more than 30 years. That probably means that he is able to talk his way out of any sticky situation that he may encounter on his other job of 21 years, a New York State Department of Corrections Officer. But on the track, it's his driving style that does the talking.
Rick is always in a hurry. That's probably due to growing up in a racing town like Watkins Glen, New York. The newest, hottest and fastest cars were always around, so it was only a matter of time until racing got into his blood. In fact, the historic racing town is so much a part of his life that he is currently writing a book about racing at Watkins Glen. Now that's mixing business with pleasure!
Scott's a guy who's not afraid to admit that he is aggressive and willing to take chances while driving. In fact, a dream feature on his car would be an electronic device that lets him know how much space is between his bumper and the bumper of the car in front of him. That line of thinking just might be what it takes to do well in the Dunlop Drivers Cup. It also might be just the thing that makes the other competitors think twice when they look in their rearview mirror. One thing is for sure, Scott doesn't sound like a middle-of-the-pack type of guy!
As a full-time homemaker, Jennifer knows what it takes to run the household: patience and knowledge. And it's no coincidence that she lists these same attributes as what it would take to win the Dunlop Drivers Cup.
Since getting into cars because it was a great way to meet boys, Jennifer has turned the table on her male competitors and plans on meeting them in a different spot … on the award stand!
She's come a long way since her first car, a '95 Cavalier, and now patrols the roads around her hometown of Elk Grove, California in her hulking Chevrolet Suburban. We all like a few “projects” to work on, and Jennifer is no different. She has two '67 Mustangs, a '92 240 SX and a '56 Chevy truck. That's probably more projects than most other homemakers out there have!
Tom isn't the type of person to head out on a leisurely Sunday drive through the country. Call it a hunch. That's because he lists his driving style as "on the edge, aggressive and pushed to the limit." He's even had the opportunity to drive a NASCAR® NEXTEL® Cup car at 165 mph at the California Speedway! That experience is something that most people would never forget, or it would be such a blur that it would be hard to remember what exactly happened! With a bumper sticker that reads "shut up, buckle up, hold on" you know Tom is ready for whatever the Dunlop Drivers Cup brings his way!
Chad once built an entire 1934 Chevy pickup from scratch over the course of six years. Talk about patience! Chad describes his driving style as "smart, fast and always having fun." So maybe he isn't patient with everything — especially when it comes to racing!
Chad believes that it will take a cool head and a calm hand at the wheel to win the Dunlop Drivers Cup. It might also take a little gutsy driving like the time he drove from the top of Lookout Pass, on the Idaho/Montana border, to Missoula, Montana in a Porsche 944S. Let's just say that it was an “afternoon drive” on a curvy stretch of highway that he'll always remember!
Mike lists his occupation as sales. He also enjoys working out and spending time with his family. Sounds like a fairly typical American male existence. But when his head hits the pillow at night, he dreams of driving a '67 Corvette on the Autobahn in Germany — showing his love for speed. Yet, Mike lists his driving style as “cautious.” By being cautious, it appears that he'll be looking for just the right opportunity during the competition, and will seize it! Or it could be just his latest sales-job to catch the other competitors napping. Only time will tell!
So far in Mike's 33 years on this earth, he doesn't have a memorable driving experience. Maybe he's just holding out for the Dunlop Drivers Cup! Actually, he has come clean by admitting that he is "not really into cars." ATVs are his passion. In fact, his dream drive would be on a California beach with the sand, speed and all the good times that are sure to be had! If he could add one feature to his ATV it would be a turbo. Now that would be something to see!
Everyone needs to keep a close eye on Rafael, because he states that if he could add one feature to his vehicle it would be wings! Dunlop Drivers Cup officials would probably frown upon this, but with a pedigree like Rafael's, he doesn't need wings to do well in the competition. He believes that he inherited his father's passion for automobiles. He is also an avid car collector, with a dozen cars to his name!
Rafael thinks that his dedication and commitment to win is what will help him do well in the Dunlop Drivers Cup. And with a track record like his, that could certainly be the case!
Back when Eric was a kid, the boys in his neighborhood tried to get their hands on magazines with Farrah Fawcett and Cheryl Tiegs on the cover. Eric, on the other hand, set his sights on other types of “models” by going out and buying the newest car magazines and fantasizing about the cars, hoping to one day have a sweet ride of his own.
And speaking of fantasizing, when Eric closes his eyes he dreams of driving on the Autobahn in excess of 200 MPH. But when he opens his eyes, reality sets in and he realizes that his best chance of winning the Dunlop Drivers Cup is by being consistent and placing near the top of the field in each event. It may not be the most glamorous approach, but it is certainly a sound approach.
Joe was born with adrenaline in his blood. He grew up around cars and motorcycles because his father raced Midgets and sports cars in the late 50s/early 60s. Joe then started racing motorcycles when he was 10. After that he went on and had a 25-year hobby as a rugby player and coach, from which he's now retired. So how does he follow all that up? He likes to race around in cars at high speeds on race tracks. Sounds like a piece of cake — comparatively speaking.
Joe lists his driving style as fast and aggressive, but easy on equipment. By the way, he is also in the process of getting his CRMA license. There is just no slowing this guy down!
During the week, Adam is a mild-mannered Nuclear Test Engineer. But when it comes to the weekends, he is ready to tackle one of his many hobbies like sailing, biking, hiking, snowboarding and, oh yeah, cars! His first car was a 1974 Datsun 260Z — a car manufactured before he was born — and he currently owns a nice selection of import cars and really fast motorcycles.
Although Adam recognizes that it will take a slow and steady approach to win the Dunlop Drivers Cup, he can't help but liken his driving style to the Roadrunner in those old Warner Brothers' cartoons. Beep Beep!
As a Parts and Accessories Manager for a motorcycle dealership in Glendale, California, Nicole is most at ease around bikes. In fact, she lists her greatest achievement as rebuilding a Honda XL250R motorcycle from just a box of engine parts and a rolling frame. What dedication, know-how and passion it must have taken to assemble a motorcycle from scratch!
Nicole was first introduced to cars and bikes by her father, who taught her how to work on them so that she would never be helpless. That's ironic, because she is now trying to render her competition at the Dunlop Drivers Cup helpless with her dazzling driving skills.
