The Parks Highway
The Talkeetna Green Light Circus Once a mining town and later the inspiration for Northern Exposure, Talkeetna is now a bustling staging area for trips up Mt. McKinley. But don't let all that Patagucci discourage you. Summer brings the annual Moose Dropping Festival (not far on the odd-o-meter from winter's Bachelor's Ball and Auction), in which moose dung is dropped from a helicopter onto a target. It's also when Mary Langham and her troupe put on The Talkeetna Green Light Circus, the only homegrown circus in Alaska, made up of whomever thinks they can spin plates, walk a tight wire, or perform Swan Lake on stilts. So as you stroll down Main Street, don't be surprised if you have to yield to a man on a unicycle. He's just practicing.
