Moose Droppings Every summer, up near Jackman, Maine, the moose flee the bug-infested forests and head to the highway, where they know they'll find a delicious blanket of salt left over from winter. The only problem is all the cars. For Lieutenant Pete Boucher and the Somerset County Sheriff's Department, summer means moose accidents - "dozens and dozens" of 'em. Boucher has seen moose total tractor trailers, seen people killed. Happens all the time. Moose get hit because they're black, and at night, you can't see them until they're through the windshield and in your lap. (Sometimes they land on top of the car.) Another reason, Boucher says, is that they're dumb as a hammer. They'll move all right, just out of your lane and into oncoming traffic. And then it takes a tow truck to haul them away. "But there's no problem getting rid of them," Boucher says. "That's a lot of meat." - B.M.
