Ever hear about the story where there’s no room at the inn? Well, we arrived at the motel too late to get a room. Now, sleep is one thing, but after hours in the Benz, the camera crew and I needed a shower. No question about it. We pleaded with the general manager to give us a room, just for the shower.
We then took advantage of the free continental breakfast. We had so much coffee that we were wired for sound. By that time, it was time to head for Hallet Motor Racing Circuit in Jennings, Okla. Maybe it was the coffee, but I was a bit stressed about driving this technical track. I shouldn’t have been. The track was a little green and moist, but the SP Sport Maxx tires pulled a respectable 36th out of 104 entries.in the morning with a 5:01:25 time.
The afternoon session was even better. The Dunlop Kleemen Motorwerks Mercedes placed 35th and shaved about 6 seconds off our time. That’s an amazing 2 seconds per lap better. The Benz was awesome. The great folks at Kicker car audio were gracious enough to provide a delicious lunch for the Cannonballers. They also gave their employees the day off so they could come and watch the race. What a great boss.
